Shopping in Valletta
A good selection of local and international brand
shops can be found on Republic Street and Merchants Street. There are also 4
shopping complexes: City Gate, located in Freedom Square. Two shopping complexes
can be found on Santa Lucia Street, Embassy 3 and Brittania. The Savoy Complex
is located on Republic Street. Most of the outlets in Valletta open from 0900 to
1230 and 1600 to 1900 Mon to Sat.
Shopping in Sliema
For a mix of upscale and low-key shopping, Bisazza
Street and Tower Road are the main arteries. A smaller and more compact area to
that of Valletta, Sliema offers pretty good international-style shopping,
including popular brands such as Marks & Spencer, Benneton, Next, Max Mara
and many more. The Plaza, located on Bisazza Street is the only shopping complex
in the area. Most of the outlets in Sliema open from 0900 to 1230 and 1600 to
1900 Mon to Sat.
Bay Street, St. Julian's/St.
George's
Bay Street is a new concept of shopping in Malta. The
Open Street, with its beautiful design and landscaping ensures a relaxed and
welcoming environment, with plenty of quality brands, restaurants and other
leisure and entertainment facilities under one roof. There is also the Artisan
Market, here you can view a colourful selection of arts and crafts, handmade
products and local wines and cuisine. Most of the outlets at Bay Street are open
from 1000 to 2200.
Ta’Qali Craft Village
A local handicrafts centre. Ideal place to view and
purchase a good selection of locally made pottery and ceramics, filigree and
jewellery, cane works, wrought iron and much more. Do not miss out on the
glassblowers – decorative glass made in the traditional manner by hand and mouth;
also etching and crystal cutting.
Valletta Open Air Market, Daily
Mostly clothes and accessories, cheap souvenirs,
religious icons, music cassettes, CDs, DVDs and videos.
Valletta Flea Market, Sunday
This is a very busy market, and although it gets frenzied at times, it is worth
a visit. Besides the usual market stuff there is an interesting collection of
bric-a-brac.
Marsaxlokk Market, Daily
This quaint fishing village offers a small daily market and a much larger Sunday
market. The daily market is a combination of a ‘tourist’ and ‘fish’
market. The fish market is very interesting to see, the variety of shapes and
colours of Mediterranean fish here is surprising, making it an attractive scene.
Vittoriosa Market,
Tuesday
Definitely worth seeing if you are in the area, it is by far one of the most
diverse and largest markets. Not a tourist market, however it provides a welcome
opportunity to mix with the Maltese people going about the business of shopping.
